Sparked by the massive acceleration in 2022, the use and capabilities of artificial intelligence or AI have grown and evolved with little regulatory measures from the United Nations or from governments. Currently, AI has rapidly become an integral part of everyday life, influencing fields ranging from education to entertainment. Because of AI's growing capabilities, it is now being used in military operations by governments across the world. Military and security use of AI lies on a broad spectrum including support systems for military operations, border security, weapons functions, and counter-terrorism. AI in military operations come with their own unique set of pros and cons. While AI use in military operations allow for faster and more accurate decisions, it also increases vulnerability to cyber attacks and malfunctions.
Delegates in DISEC will have to explore a complex topic, a topic that continues to evolve and change each and every day. Delegates are tasking with finding possible solutions to a unprecedented issue that governments across the world are struggling to solve. AI is our new reality and it is imperative that delegates consider key ethical, environmental, and social concerns regarding AI; all while adhering to diplomatic formalities and representing a country whose view may differ from their own.
